The FDA has recently improved the new Zeltiq CoolSculpting device to reduce fatty tissue by cryo lipolysis. The device is noninvasive and can be performed in the office with no anesthesia and no downtime. The reduction of fat cells is accomplished by controlled, localized cooling. The device is applied to the skin and the fatty tissue is cooled over a period of approximately an hour. The process is comfortable and there are no restrictions on activities after the procedure. Some patients may feel a tingling sensation after the procedure or mild tenderness to pressure for 1-2 weeks. Still, activity level and exercise should not be impacted and an over-the-counter analgesic such as Advil or Tylenol is sufficient.
The device can be used on the back, abdomen, flanks, arms, and chin. Although the fat is absorbed by the body there is no increase in blood levels of lipids.
